As part of the IEEE WIE STAR (Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist) program an outreach activity, ‘Enlighten 3.0’ was organised by the WIE chairs of the colleges under Zone 5, Kochi subsection. The program was developed to address the growing concern that, at a young age, girls are discouraged from careers in mathematics, science, and engineering. This educational outreach program promotes involvement of IEEE members with local junior high and high schools in order to create a positive image of engineering careers.
Phase 1 of Enlighten 3.0 was a one-day program conducted at Our Lady’s Girls High School, Thoppumpady on 30th June, 2018 for 11th and 12th standard students. Volunteers from the four colleges of Zone 5 introduced the students to the various engineering disciplines, its scope and job opportunities. The branches like Aerospace which was not heard of by the students were also introduced. Topics like how to get into engineering, various exams which should be cleared, best colleges for a particular course were also covered in the session. The skills required to take up engineering was also discussed. The various misconception that the present society face regarding engineering were also cleared and after the session more students showed interest to take up engineering as a profession. The students were really excited to see the videos and presentation and were curious to know more. There were also interactive games like puzzles in between the sessions. Altogether, the program was a success as it was able to achieve it’s aim of giving the students an insight into the field of engineering.
