IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING (WIE) is a global network of IEEE members and volunteers dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists, and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interest in a career in engineering and science.
WIE Summit 2019 was held in TOC H Institute of Science and technology dated on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of July 2019 which had gathered students from across various engineering colleges of Kerala. The summit was a 3 day long program, with various workshops that spread knowledge among the delegates, various fun oriented activities, technical rounds and so on.
The event commenced at 10:30 am on 21st July 2019 with the inauguration ceremony. The inaugural speech was delivered by Mrs. Mini Ulanat.
The afternoon session of the first-day welcomed a team of speakers from Prayaana, a unique employability, entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem for women. Ms. Chandra Vadhana, the founder and chief mentor at Prayaana and Founder and at 4Tunefactory. Her session was really inspiring and entertaining for the young women delegates. She shared her experience as an entrepreneur, her story of how she reached where she is now and lessons from her life to the audience followed by which the monthly session of The Future Lounge, by Prayaana was arranged.

The evening session from 6 pm witnessed a short session for the Wie-Learn participants and the 12-hour hackathon came to an end when they submitted their works on the next day morning. This year’s training was based on Web development and websites were created by the students on the problem: Travel page, Incredible India. Excellent works were submitted and the program saw fruitful results. The winners were awarded the prize and all participant teams and mentors were appreciated for their learning and sharing knowledge.
Parallely we had another session. A Session on “Introduction to Version Control System via Git and GitHub” was conducted with an aim to introduce how the workflow and project tracking is occurring in an Industry. The session was conducted in association with IEEE ORE(Outreach for Resources in Engineering) community. Mr. Feny Roy and Ms. Pooja Haridas took the session, covering the basics of VCS, What is Git, What is GitHub, How is Git different from GitHub, the introduction of Git software, the logic behind its working, the basic commands in the workflow, etc. Git is a distributed version control system for tracking changes in source code during software development. It is designed for coordinating work among programmers, but it can be used to track changes in any set of files. Its goals include speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. The free software was shared with the attendees for installation and a real-time hands-on experience was given. Majority of the attendees were not aware of any VCS software before the session and this was able to give a broader view of the working of teams in the software-related industry.
This day witnessed 3 workshops which had been held parallely in different venues.
Speaker : Nithin from NIT
As a part of Women in Engineering Summit 2019, IEEE had conducted an image processing workshop. The workshop oriented the participants to the in-depth knowledge on image analysis and natural image processing along with their applications in a practical way. The workshop was based on the applications of image processing and deep learning in computer vision and hands-on training for object detection, object segmentation, classification and retrieval of images using Python. By the end of this workshop, the participants became meticulously aware of image processing techniques, and deep learning techniques that can be applied for computer vision tasks and will have a set of algorithms which they will be able to apply to their applications and data sets. The session explained about different aspects of image and its processing by which we can increase the clarity and quality of an image.
2. WOMEN IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Speaker: Sonu J A ,CEO of starting trouble
The workshop helped the students to come out of their comfort zones and interact with the students of various colleges. By means of various activities and tasks they were conveyed the importance of women in entrepreneurship and that they must break through the nutshell that pertains around them and open up. The session boosted up their confidence level as sensitive and delicate matters were taken care of and dealt in simple manner.
3. CYBER SECURITY
Speaker: Mr. Hiron Bose,Scientist ,Knowledge research centre ,CDAC, Thiruvananthapuram
